Gargrave is situated 4 miles from the busy market town of Skipton often referred to as the "gateway to the Dales". It is the point at which the Leeds/Liverpool canal, river Aire, A65 (road to the Lake District) and the Pennine cycle way all meet.
About Gargrave
With origins from Roman times it is a picturesque village with a variety of old stone cottages and buildings built through various architectural periods. Enjoy a walk along the upper, middle and lower village greens which run along both sides of the river Aire, and beside the Leeds/Liverpool canal (15 minutes to 2 hours), or browse around the shops on the high street.
For dining out you are literally spoilt for choice with 3 pubs (offering a wide range of excellent value bar meals) and a superb Indian restaurant all within 200 yards of walking distance, or alternatively we have the award winning Tempest Arms, The Bull at Broughton (Nigel Howarth's latest venture) or The Coniston Hall Hotel (old hotel all located within a 2-3 mile radius).
Things to do
Gargrave is on the fringe of the Yorkshire Dales and River Cottage is an ideal base to explore all it has to offer. Whether it be driving/cycling around the country lanes admiring some of the most dramatic and breathtaking views or strolling around the numerous "pretty" villages, many of which have special events throughout the year, like the Scarecrow Festival of Kettlewell and the Dickensian Festival at Grassington.
Visit the priory at Bolton Abbey, the stump cross caverns at Pateley Bridge, the waterfalls trail or white scar cave at Ingleton, Malham Cove and Tarn or for the very energetic walk The Three Peaks.
There are numerous historical halls close by which along with their magnificent gardens are open to the public throughout the year. Howarth and the Bronte Museum along with several other museums depicting all aspects of dales life in the past are most interesting.
Pony trekking, 4x4 off-roading, golf driving range, pitch and putt, fishing and the swimming baths are all within a few minutes drive of River Cottage.
For alternative transport enjoy a trip on the canal (from a 1 hour cruise to a full day excursion) or ride the steam train from Settle/Carlisle - Embsay/Bolton Abbey - or the Worth Valley Line.
Have a fun packed day at the Lightwater Valley Theme Park or down on the farm at Hesketh Farm Park or Thornton Hall Farm Country Park.
There really is something for everyone.
